Cold-weather gear Each time the Outdoor Retailer show comes to town, The Tribune gets calls from gear geeks and backcountry enthusiasts wondering if the huge event at the Salt Palace is open to the public. Since it's a trade show that gives vendors a look at new products from manufacturers, the public isn't invited. But news media are, so here is our sampling of some new and tried-and-true gear from the 2005 Winter Show. Inka Pen Pens that write anywhere (in freezing temperatures, underwater) have been around for a while. But engineer and former oceanographer Greg Adelman has figured out a simple yet useful new twist: This pen has a ring on one end, which allows it to be attached to a jacket, carabiner or keychain. The pen part can be either pulled quickly out the bottom or popped into the turned-around cap to become full-sized. Made of stainless steel, it won't be fazed by water or rough treatment but weighs almost nothing, making it a perfect accompaniment to your waterproof-paper journal during that rafting trip.
